What
starts as a daunting, frog-throated, swampy sort of thing like a
stark Robbie Robertson sung by Leon Redbone quickly loses its finesse
and turns into a droll crawler sung by an 80-year-old Dylan impersonator.
The vocals border on novelty and become grating. On a very facile
level, the recording is reminiscent of Jack Hayter's last exquisite
CD, but without the charm or lyrical depth. Overall, too much style
over substance, not enough melody, not enough there to keep it interesting.
